All of the children were photographed in Fatima Mansions, a poor area of Dublin made up of roughly ten blocks of flats. I was drawn to this place, not because of the social conditions there, but rather because of the character traits of the local children who are very lively and open. They make do with their poor and dismal surroundings for their games. They do not seem to be as affected by the reality as their adult counterparts. Their child's world is stronger. In the past few years the Gardai have increased their presence in the area. The philosophy of the police is to convince the citizens of Fatima Mansions that they are not the enemy but the ones who want to help them. They protect their children from drug dealers and other possible abuse.
